Introducing the New To Tri Wave at the Outlaw Original

21 September 2026

If you've been thinking about giving triathlon a go, the Outlaw Original Weekend is a brilliant place to start. This July we're hosting a dedicated New To Tri wave as part of the Outlaw Original Sprint on Saturday 24 July 2027, and it's the perfect introduction event for anyone looking to get into the sport.

The distances

The New To Tri wave follows the Sprint course: a 750m open water swim in the Regatta Lake, a 20km bike ride and a 5km run. It's a distance that gives you a proper taste of triathlon without asking too much of you on your first go.

A completely traffic-free bike course

One of the things that makes this such a good first triathlon is that the whole bike course is traffic free. There are no cars and no traffic management to think about, because the entire route is on a private road within the venue. The course is just four simple laps, so you always know where you are and what's coming next, and you can focus on enjoying the ride.

A late start

The New To Tri wave starts at 11:30, which gives you plenty of time on the morning of the race to register and rack your bike without feeling rushed. You can arrive, get your bearings, take in the atmosphere and get set up at a relaxed pace before it's time to head to the water.

Extended cut-off times

We know that the first few races can feel a bit daunting, so we've built in extra time for everyone in the New To Tri wave. You'll have 45 minutes to complete the swim and T1, 1 hour 35 minutes for the bike and T2, and 55 minutes for the run. That means you can settle into each discipline and take your transitions at a pace that suits you, without watching the clock the whole way round.

How the start works

The waves will be split by category at the start of the swim. Athletes in the open category will set off first, with the female athletes starting a couple of minutes after them, so you'll know exactly when you're up and can get into the water with the rest of your wave.

A calm and supportive atmosphere

The New To Tri wave is all about making the day enjoyable. It's for people taking on their first triathlon, for those introducing or re-introducing themselves to the sport, and for anyone who fancies a no-pressure, calm and chilled race. Whether you're coming back after a break or you've only just bought your first pair of tri shorts, you'll be racing alongside people who are in the same boat, with plenty of encouragement along the way.

Race rules

While the atmosphere is relaxed, British Triathlon Federation (BTF) rules will still apply to all athletes, so it's worth having a read through them ahead of race day.
